New Vibram Five Fingers Bare Foot Training

His and Hers... Loving the new ones, the laces were a nice touch, and MUCH more comfortable then my original KSO's...

Below is a copy of the original post I wrote on barefoot training last year (March 2nd 2010).

I recently spent a few days shadowing at Pendola Training in Reno NV. One of the many, many things that I walked away with was the benefits of bare foot training.  Their team has all of their athletes and clients training barefoot or in the Vibram 5 finger shoes.

If you have ever tried it, training barefoot is truly humbling.  I'm pretty decent at jumping rope but after taking off my shoes my speed dropped dramatically and my form broke pretty quick. Made me realize how weak my feet are compared to the rest of my body.

Unlike conventional shoes that insulate you from your surroundings, training barefoot or using FiveFingers footwear enhances your sense of touch and feel, while improving foot strength, balance, agility, and range of motion. Modern footwear has a soft cushy sole that has allowed us to strike with the heel of our foot effectively lengthening our running stride.

Motion studies demonstrate that when running barefoot, one naturally lands on the forefoot, directly below your center of gravity. This results in optimum balance, increased stability, less impact, and greater propulsion.

In addition to strengthening the smaller muscles of the feet, barefoot training inadvertently improves ankle mobility in athletes who have been stuck in restrictive shoes their entire lives. From an injury perspective, strengthening your foot could lead to fewer injuries. If you're going to make a sharp cut on the hardwood floor or out in the field the first thing that comes in contact with the ground is your foot.  The foot will help absorb some of that force, then it will migrate up to the next joint in the kinetic chain... your ankle... your knee... etc. Any weak links in the chain will increase your likelihood of injury.

In summary, when we strengthen the body and train for performance we really need to start from the toes up! For more information I found a great website that summarizes the foot strike and benefits of training barefoot.
